Walk To End Alzheimer’s 5K
(October 08, 2014)
It has been two months since I started training for the, “Walk To End Alzheimer’s 5K” and what a two months it has been. I have Chronic Low Back Pain which keeps me from walking long distances or for sitting for too long and if I do either my pain level raises. I am wanting to complete this walk for three reasons,
1st – Foremost to support our friend Steve who lives in the Anaheim, Ca. area and was just earlier this year diagnosed with the early stages of this dreaded disease.
2nd – Is to prove to myself that no matter what, if I set my mind to it I can still do it. There are people with different ailments that allow their condition to control their lives and let it dictate what they will and will not do, I am not one of those people. There will be runners completing this run/walk in 12-15 minutes and there will be walkers finishing it in say 25-30 minutes. With my back issues I will be lucky to finish the first mile in that time. I know, I will have to stop “often” to stretch, let the spasms that will happen stop and for various other reasons. If I finish this walk in under 75 minutes I will be shocked, but no matter how long it takes me to complete the 3 mile trek, “I Will Finish It.”
3rd – To help support the Alzheimer’s Association, of course.
I started training on August 23, at a meager 205 lbs and here today, Wednesday, 10/8 I weighed in at __198__. I was at first unable to walk 1/4 mile(s) without having to stop and now I can walk ½+ mile(s) with some effort. The rest of my team is from the Los Angeles area and will be completing the walk at the Huntington Beach walk site, where as I will be walking here in Rancho Cordova, Ca. around our local Kaiser hospital. I used the odometer on my car and from the exact end of our court around the hospital and surrounding land is exactly one mile, so three trips around fills the needed distance. My plan is to text Captain GJ (Steve’s wife) right when I start and again when I complete my journey (5K). From myself, Steve and Captain GJ, thank you to all of you who donated to the, “Walk To End Alzheimer’s 5K,” under my name. I’m hoping this is my first of many to come.
To make a donation or to join Team Steve, go to my personal page at, http://act.alz.org/goto/kreis64 and enter my name as the walker. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated and will go to a great cause, finding a cure for Alzheimer’s.
Thank You All,
