Talk About a Waste of Space

Recently I decided to help with my wife’s shall we say, “Collection” of shoes and boots which are starting to procreate and build their first ever city, in our master closet, but that’s not what this post is about.

This post is about my favorite toy store, let’s call them “HD,” sister store located on the internet “HDI”.  A few days ago I had to order new security cameras and while doing so HDI was flashing an add for the wire shelving systems sale and there it was, shelving for her shoes and at prices equal to if I did them myself.  I went ahead and ordered three of them as well as two vertical supports.  Here’s the first issue, the vertical supports which areShelving Vertical Supports4’l x 1/2″w x 1/2″h, they came shipped (Sorry, forgot to get photos of the box) together in a flattened box that was, 5’h x 2.5’w x 1.5″h.  Seems like a waste of unused space, but okay they are an odd shape.

Second issue, the three shelves came shipped separately in boxes that are, 37″l x 17″w x 17″h, the shelves themselves are only 36″l x 1’w x 1/2″h.  If that doesn’t sound like much here are some photos to check out. This is one (1) shelf and the box, it was shipped in (3′ x 17″ x 17″). Here’s the shelf outside of the box, it was shipped in a box (3′ x 17″ x 17″).  Now, here’s all three (3) of the shelves laying outside of the boxes, they were shipped in (equals 3′ x 17″ x 54″).

I question who thinks shipping air (unused space inside these boxes) instead of using appropriately sized boxes and additional “PAID” freight is good for the business?  Think of the expense that went into shipping this 90% empty space, the driver, gas, insurance and employees for the delivery trucks (one at each end).  Then you have to add in the pilots, gas, insurance and ground crew for the aircraft used.  Now, I will admit, I did get free shipping with my order but that’s not my point, I hope someone else out there gets it?Please, let me know your thoughts and if you think I’m (   ) Spot On or (   ) Way Off
